The CORE Fundamentals of Physics Chapter 5 and 6 deal with particles and dynamic paint respectively, there you’ll learn all about every detail of it.

One thing you could do is add a narrow plane along the top and make that a particle emitter. As particles you can use meta balls with a water shader. You’ll need to play with the settings to find the look you’re going for. In addition you can work with dynamic paint on the pool water to have it interact with the particles.
I did that a little while ago for a fountain and it looked more realistic than I expected – plus is less taxing on your hardware.
Agree with Omar to the point with the denoiser. The denoiser only affects cycles, that’s what your render settings are set to. However the material preview uses Eevee – which leads to the likely problem here:
You are using 4.2.1 while the course was recorded in 2.83.0 (see bottom right corner)
Eevee has gotten a major overhaul for version 4.2 where many settings have changed and the way eevee interacts with lighting and all. That’s likely the reason why yours looks so different. Best recommendation is to download Blender 2.83 and use that to follow along. https://download.blender.org/release/
Then once you’ve grasped the basics you can go back to 4.2 and try to adapt your knowledge to the new version.
Aside from the threshold you could also check and make sure that under the material and render preview you have the compositor set to either always or camera so Blender know to actually use the viewport compositor. I might be switched off for some reason.
I agree 100% with all of the above, very good points. My 2 cents to this are:
1. InstaMAT kind of mixes some of the best feature of Substance Painter and Designer, plus it offers so much more with their Material from image creator. I’m in love with InstaMAT for that reason alone. It may be still in development, but it’s already ahead in features compared to some other free programs.
2. As far as portfolio goes – I would not recommend it. Results from tutorials show (hopefully) great progress and are good to fill up your social media, because that’s not considered a portfolio as far as I know. For a portfolio that might be meant to find a job one day you should only include your own ideas and polish those as much as you can. It’s not about the quantity, just quality. Personally I don’t even scroll through a portfolio someone promotes and the first things I see are donuts, soborg chairs and that weird arm robot thingy from blender bros. (not saying they’re not good tuts, done them myself)
I see it this way: If I want to hire a worker in my company and to weed out the best I task them to design and build a little chest of drawers, I would not even consider those who just copy a certain “thing” from the Swedish abomination in blue and yellow.
So long story short: Social yes with reference to the course ideally, portfolio NO.

If it turns purple that means Blender cannot find the file. Something must have gone wrong with the file path of the image, I would either check the path or simply delete the image texture and add a new one with the image/sequence/movie.
Works for me just like in the video – click, hold and drag. Only if the camera is selected or was the last selected object though. If another object is active or was the last active, it doesn’t work.
So just in case someone else runs into any issue with this I’m gonna leave my problem and solution here:
Problem: When I opened the provided course file I saw the motion tracks but not the clip, because of above mentioned reasons. However when I brought in the sequence I created following lesson 3 I had the clip but not the tracking information.
Solution: I opened the course file with the missing image sequence again, went to File -> External Data -> Find Missing Files and navigated to where I saved the image sequence. That way I got the clip with the tracking data working in the course file.
I might have missed something along the way though, so please correct me in that case. I don’t know if there is a way to copy tracking data from one clip to another?

Totally get it about the footage. grabbed them from the website and threw them in, just didn’t quite connect the dots at first when opening the included file.

If your already using a RTX A4000 I assume you’re shooting for professional workstation equipment? If so maybe upgrade to a newer version of said card with the A4000 only having 16 GB Vram. Even the regular RTX 4000 comes with 20 nowadays, up to 48 on the 6000. No idea what that costs though. Alternative to workstation would be a RTX4090, at least it comes with 24 GB VRAM.
Keep in mind to also update the CPU as to not bottleneck the GPU. Animation and simulation data is, I believe, still handled by CPU before the GPU renders it, so it needs to keep up. If money is no issue maybe look into Threadripper. Plus a minimum of 64GB Ram should do the trick.
The willingness to learn is strong in this one 😉 Will be working through your course this week and see where I go from there.
