Here’s the short render of the space scene. Lets see how it all fits later with the whole reel. And no EXR from Sheepit surely is a challenge for compositing, but at least it forces you to get creative that’s for sure.

@theluthier Kent help me out a bit here, I’d like to know your thoughts, I’m torn in half. I want to participate in the course even though it is a beginners class, but if I do that then it means taking a month off the demo reel work. Yet if I do the course a render could come out of it to put on the reel. Should I invest the time into finishing the reel or should I focus on the course?

Btw your portfolio work is solid! imo you can apply for jobs even without the demo reel, at least that my opinion.

@dostovel oh, did you know it’s a 3 week class this time? Since homework for week  1 is due this Sunday already, that leaves a little more than 2 weeks for the class. So a lot less than a month. Just thought you should know

@smurfmier1985 Well I was thinking on doing the barrel, model it simple but put all the energy into texturing, lighting and composition on trying to make it the most realistic as I can. But since I only have Saturday’s and Sunday’s to work in Blender I would feel bad not participating in the class as a whole, meaning seeing everyone else’s work, commenting, helping where I can, posting my progress, sharing workflow advice, etc. Kent every class really makes an emphasis on not flexing and I wouldn’t want to seem a flexionist.

@dostovel You are the most modest person I know Omar, I never see you flexing! Personally I find your work super inspiring, it motivates me to try harder.

@smurfmier1985 Thanks Miranda, I am ashamed though of never doing the other type of flexing either, I work at an office, the sedentary life is killing me.

But back to the dilemma at hand. As for the hyper real barrel, I don’t know if Kent will be online today as it’s weekend so I’ll give you my two cents.

Personally I think creating new work regularly and continuously improving your skills is super important. It’s also good to keep your portfolio fresh and up to date with new work. You’ve been working on your reel for quite a while and besides creating scenes with preexisting models you haven’t done any new work (correct me if I’m wrong).

Might be a nice change of pace, to keep your creative juices flowing. It is only a 3 week class this time so it won’t be a full month.

Ultimately I think you should do what feels good to do. Do you want to create some new stuff? Or do you want to work through the demo reel? Follow your inner artist heart, it’s like a compass.

I always think that the best art comes from following your heart, make what you  want to make.

For example, I tried to do the wooden stylized treasure chest for class. But I wasn’t feeling it. I like realism in games, stylized is not my thing. So after many hours staring at my screen doing nothing I switched to making a sci-fi treasure chest. Within no time I had the basis of the chest done!

So my advice is, do what you want to do the most at this moment in time.
