Figured out how to fix one of the bakes that was bothering me and added the zones of the face and blemishes. REally like how this is turning out!

Oh, that has improved a lot!

Moved the Blemishes to after the saturation/pink tone fix because it was seeming too subtle. Not sure how crazy I am about the freckles, but I that might be because I’m doing more  of a portrait than a “random” person, and I’m half tempted to put the freckles into the color map where they can be more precisely placed. The procedural ones might be fine if I was doing someone who had a lot of small ones, but not sure that I like the procedural ones. I”m going to move on to hair for now though.

I tried at first to use the newer system, but couldn’t figure out how to get the mapping controls like Kent used to work with it and it was a bit of a workaround to even get it started. So I switched to the particle system for the Vellus, and I may go back and do it for the eyebrows. The lashes were a small enough area it wasn’t too much trouble to do things a bit more manually. I think the newer system will be fine for the scalp hair later though (as it has the ability to do some things that the particle system couldn’t do as easily).  The vellus really does add just a little bit to it.

At one point, though… I messed up the scale and… it didn’t quite turn out right… 😀 (I had the diameter scale too high… I had it set to .01 instead of  .001 😀 )

Here’s the first one I’ve done where I felt it was really starting to look like my person. Had hair on him last night, but reminded me of a completely different person. this one is much closer. I’ll probably redo the eye brows and I need to readd the vellus because I tweaked the face.

I already know at least one shot I’m going to aim for… I have a perfect skybox for this one… 😀

I haven’t abandoned this… I took a bit of time off from it because I was hitting a point of frustration. On the one hand, this is the best, most detailed piece I’ve ever done and I’m pleased with the progress I have made on it. But I feel like I’m still missing the likeness. I thought I was getting there, and with a number of tweaks I’ve done, I’ve felt like I was close, but it still hasn’t felt right to me yet. Not like I got with the Leonard Nimoy Spock one I did about 4-5 years ago (that I never finished).

I’m trying to capture a young Mark Hamill, and I feel like at times I’ve nearly had it, but yet it seems to elude me and I’m trying to figure out what I’m missing. Perhaps I’ve just been looking at this one for too long that I’m turning a blind eye to something obvious, but I would appreciate any help or tips anyone might have. I keep feeling like I’m about 80-90% there, but can’t seem to figure out where it’s wrong.

                  Thanks!

(If I can get the likeness right in the base, I believe everything else should fall into place and I can redo the lashes, brows, and vellus.)

Well remember, even Kent in the course says you wont get it the first or second or third time, and so on and so forth, you have to try a lot a lot and you’ll get very incrementally, to a point at which you wont even notice you got better. But you are getting better. So if you feel you can make a better Luke, maybe start over, it never is as bad as it sounds.

Just wanted to say I haven’t given up on this project. I think I’m going to take a step back and try to work some on the likeness… all the stuff that came after I’m more or less happy with, so if I can get that better, I think everything else will fall into place. Went all the way back to the sculpt. Once I redo the sculpt, I’m fairly certain I can get the retopo to fit it, then it’s just a matter of reworking what needs to be reworked (which likely includes a lot of the textures). Eye brows and lashes I was going to redo anyway… Hair and shirt I should be able to tweak enough to get to work so I don’t think I’ll have to rework those much…. but i will have to redo a significant amount… which is kind of daunting, but I think it will be worth it once I get the likeness and most of the rest I understand well enough that it’s just tedious to get through.
