Thats amazing Grady, i am happy for you Brother, and yes indeed, the sculpting part is just the basis to work from, but as with every other section of this creative process, it is vital to get right, or it will negatively impact the rest of the work that comes afterwards

This course instantly got my attention due to its offer to take me through the whole creative process from start to finish, and i am sure that if the sculpting section is a professional masterclass, then the rest is highly likely to be the same, and i am well aware of Kent’s popularity and quality of his work in this field, all in all, colour me impressed

…and its great to hear from others such as yourself Grady, who have or are going through this course, i look forward to seeing the end result Brother, and congratulate you on your patience and ability to keep going for 5 years, that speaks volumes alone

So, i just finished my Low Poly Room Challenge on the Fundamentals of 3D Mesh Modeling…. boy was that a lot of fun once i got going

Here’s the final viewport render i did, decided not to go with Orthographic, and instead stick with my good ol’ 1920 x 1080p viewport render instead

I bet it did too lol, funny thing is, i first started playing around with game design and 3D modeling on 3ds max decades ago, certainly wouldnt go back there now though, damn was it expensive back then, but not as much as Lightwave and Maya

I still get as angry as that Cookie just thinking about the prices that prevented so many from ever trying out this wonderful creative art

You know what Martin… i was even using merge by distance whilst doing that tutorial exercise throughout, but i guess it slipped my mind at this point, and i certainly do need to keep reminding myself to check these things often, and not just get so engrossed by what i am doing that i forget such an important little lifesaver like this…. merge by distance, recalculate normals

I no longer feel sorry for that poor old Blender cube, it’s all those unwanted vertices i feel sorry for now

Spot on Blake, i read through this comment section to find that was the only issue, not unzipping the folder before attempting to add the .png meant it would not do anything, as it doesn’t read into the zip file at all, only takes what formats it recognises and uses them, so unzipping is always necessary

I know we can be hyper focused on learning and following along as perfectly as we can at this beginner stage, and in my case too, as i live with ADHD, i literally take note of all said and nothing that isnt most of the time, and cannot help that usually, but switching out of that mode into problem solving mode tends to fix that for me, if i feel i need to use it

Ive gotta say though, i didnt think of unzipping this time round, so completely missed my mistake until looking on here in the comments to see if anyone else had the same issue as me here

Another point i feel is important is that it might have been good to have that explained before starting this, but if all we ever do is get spoonfed every little piece then we are not relying on our own powers of observation and attempting to solve these things ourselves, and upgrade our own knowledge within Blender where we can…

…unzipping files and folders was something taught, just not in this course, so it is expected that we know these things already as file and folder structure and usable format conditions

Should really have put this Hard Drive up here before the Coffee cups, but i was intending to hold off, as i wanted to add more to it – the back ports, but that’ll be something i will come back to later, so for now, here is my Intro to 3D Modeling exercise’s External Hard Drive model i created…

….I also want to come back and add materials, some texturing, and a glow/bloom effect to the front light also, and a nice falt surface beneath the HDD so that it can reflect a little light and add some depth

I followed along exactly and had the same issue with not smoothing at 45 degree’s as in the tutorial… cant think of any reason other than maybe a Blender version updated something, but i sure would like to know what caused it, even though, as you stated, its for shading purposes, so the end result is ok

…strangely though, at first when copying the tutor, the angle amount wouldnt change even when scrolling or clicking on the increase amount arrow next to the angle amount value box

                              ed with Only Rim.png

So, what seems to have fixed it was checking the “Only Rim” box on the Solidify Modifier above it in the stack, but i am clueless as to whether it is a fix, or if it was not the optimal way to fix it, or even if i could go through this without needing a fix, and i am also lacking the understanding of why this happened… is it a Blender version thing, or something else?

Help is most certainly needed here to understand what has happened and why it has not worked by following along to this tutorial
