When trying to smooth the bool punches, at about 17 mins into the video. My smooth by angle doesn’t seem to have any effect on them unless I activate Ignore Sharpness. Will this cause me any issues down the line?

        Hi @Stoic ,

Well, there might be something along the way, that you did differently, but when enabling ‘Ignore Sharpness’ solves it, then you don’t have to be afraid that it will cause any issues further along. It’s just about how things are Shaded.

Don’t feel bad for just clicking a couple of check boxes and hoping something works and then when it works, having no idea why it works, only that you solved your problem. Even master Blender nerds do it that way and they’re just happy their issue went away.

And sometimes, even if it doesn’t give you the look you’re looking for now, doing so will show you something you’ll remember in a later project that will be useful.

I followed along exactly and had the same issue with not smoothing at 45 degree’s as in the tutorial… cant think of any reason other than maybe a Blender version updated something, but i sure would like to know what caused it, even though, as you stated, its for shading purposes, so the end result is ok

…strangely though, at first when copying the tutor, the angle amount wouldnt change even when scrolling or clicking on the increase amount arrow next to the angle amount value box

                Hi Charlie @KingFisher78 ,

Here, again, it is (almost certainly) not a difference in Blender Version.

What happened? I can’t tell from just a description (I’d have to see the .blend file, probably, to be able to figure it out).

One thing, that will affect the Smoothing, is not just the Angle you set, but also the Angles in your Model; if you for instance used a Cylinder with a different Amount of Vertices, then the  Smooth Angle Threshold would be different as well. For instance, with 8 Vertices, the Angle would be 45 (360/8) and with 12 Vertices, the Angle would be 30 (360/12).

I can highly recommend watching Modify and use it as reference to go back to whenever you need to, but especially watch the Bevel Modifer Lesson: https://cgcookie.com/lessons/lesson-2-bevel-modifier

That’s not only the Modifier that trips ‘beginners’ (and I use that word in a very broad sense here) up the most, but Paul also explains very well  how the Edge Angle (that is the angle between the Faces, connected to an Edge, while Face Angle is the angle between Edges of a Face. That’s what you get, when you let programmers do the naming 😉) is being calculated in Blender; this also helps to understand the working of the Smooth By Angle Modifier.
