I had the same flickering problem in 2.82. I set the z scale value to zero in the mapping node and the problem went away.
In Blender 2.8 the projected object for the knife project tool must be two dimensional. It will project a circle onto a cube but not a cylinder.
It was in the un-extracted form the images do not show that way.
