Thanks for your advice Jonathan. I played around with it a bit more and got something that was good enough to submit. The finished result is here

Hi Corwin – you might find the plugin Speedsculpt useful. It adds a lot of functionality to Blender’s sculpting.

It looks like this functionality has changed since 2.73. It would be nice if there was a little footnote about that in the video…
