Thanks @theluthier !
just a drive by laconic nod, for now…
from what I managed to skim and scrub through, loving the new direction already!
not to mention that the [tentative] time frame should work much better than assumed (similar to last year’s) for me too (what started the thread; one giant leap for me, a smaller one for mankind ; ) as much as one can actually plan and take plans seriously in 2020s that is : P
so, hopes up and, see you summer/ autumn!
For context and additional information extortion*:
At risk of coming across somewhere between impatient, needy/ demanding, cynically rude and just plain psychotic (which I’m not! I promise! ; ) I actually need this information (and sooner is better) in order to take part, even theoretically.
I’ll make an exception to my general policy of keeping my story on need to know basis…
I need to either take or refuse a gig offered by the end of this weekend that inherently cannot coexist with the collab.. a judgement call;
To make an informed decision I need, well, information!
: D
now I know, to my genuine excitement of a good kind, that there will in fact be a collab, at all… and that IS great! No sarcasm… if we know when, roughly (not expecting dates here) that would take me even further in this process of mine (emphasis and stress on if)…
The thing is, these gigs that I speak of and depend on span through months, typically, and are demanding my undivided attention, pretty much throughout their entirety… this particular one that I’m considering now would come at cost of me being benched regarding my involvement relevant to the collab till mid may (best case) or june (realistic projection).
Collabs are, to put it mildly, events that work best for me, with no real alternative save maybe taking a dedicated university course on physical premises, when it comes to learning blender (among other things);
the synergy and human connection behind creating an actual complex piece of art, balancing [healthy] competition and cooperation with hundreds of different people with a common goal, challenging self in a selfcontained frame with a feedback loop not simulated but real, all this, and more, in an amazing self managed evolving process that pieces together all these efforts in a unique product is, both an incredible feat (I honestly doubted that we can actually pull it off the first time I was introduced to the concept, and it was significantly smaller then too) and an experience that someone that has set themselves to climb the mountain of 3D for whatever the reason, cannot afford to miss!
*savingFace while mapping the maze ; )
thanks @adrian2301 ! good to know and, l00king forward to it!
: )
I intentionally avoided naming names, or targeting any one in particular by tagging in this query of mine… since the ping has pinged anyway, @theluthier : ‘hope to see you this year! learning from you, especially in the collabs format, is an honor and an absolute pleasure… keep it keepin’_ _ _my cordial salute!
not everyone all at once, please!
: D
asking, beside raw wishful thinking, because the biggest obstacle for me taking part in these is allocating the time;
so, if any kind soul in the know, regardless of if they are staff or crew, cares to share some information on this, they just may increase my chances in tetris of time management slightly… and, they would have my gratitude!
; D

to… illustrate what I meant by parody of self, and, as general observation leading to my “hypothesis” (above) now reproduced…
: D

@theluthier I was expecting artifacts and, all kinds of growing pains, but not at this magnitude…
in hindsight, my “hypothesis” is, clumsiness due to lack of experience and learning on the fly aside:
1) the difference between my high and low poly meshes is just too extreme (hundreds vs tens of millions) for this method of “tricking” via normal maps to actually work and not look like a parody of self… it seems btw, after a very sloppy research, that what I was expecting and going for is achievable with displacement maps, which, are in our case a no no (engine limitations)… bla… after trying different extrusion settings, then shooting in the dark with all kinds of settings and even trying to introduce a cage, no significant amelioration presented itself…
2) the sculpting itself needs to have its goal in mind throughout the process… for example, the stones in the support should not vary in offset (in regard to the target geometry) as much as they do in my end result, etc…
I would (if there was time, and, also seeing that I just may have misinterpreted the whole ‘low poly; follow the concept art closely’ directive from the get go) actually redo (!) : D the whole thing, from scratch with all these (and many more) things learned in mind… as the sunday deadline nears though, and the fact that all my activities here were practically derailed by unexpected events this week doesn’t help either; realistically, I’ll try and use the time remaining to “fix” instead, and go for finished rather than what I would find satisfactory… and… cannot even guarantee that in good conscious, all things considered, two days before the curtain drops…
thanks @theluthier for, well, everything! : ) if you do find the time to share some thoughts on my “hypothesis” while putting together all these different assets driven by a vague interpretation of a digital painting, from different people from all four corners of this lovely planet of ours into a unified master file, hunting for missing cavity maps and finding a naming convention and a method of syncing that just may work, all within a month, in a location that one can walk through, even if only by WASD (did I mention that this whole endeavour is, crazy aside, to me just astonishing ; ) I would appreciate it, but, totally not hold a grudge if you don’t…
: )
I have, in a way, hitched a ride here… the clearly stated prerequisites (courses at least viewed) ignored; because, for me, it was a unique opportunity to, as I’ve openly stated on multiple occasions, “make myself” actually do and learn things that I normally wouldn’t, such as sculpting, UV mapping, texture baking… and for a better part, it worked!
: )
I’ve learned a lot!
had it all gone (my side) according to the plan, it would have worked “completely” I dare claim!
: D
I’ll stop writing now and open blender, maybe to finally try and see, if a little late, what in bloodyBlazes cavity maps actually ARE…
thanks @ullreym !
still building any “intuition” through trial and error… input from people ahead in the game is very helpful…
thanks Spikes!
did the checker thing…

: D
I’m guessing that I’ll need to bake some BAD cookies before the good ones emerge, eventually…
final!
; )
new unwrap, “automatic placement”:

…and some manual scaling and packing:

what I am settling for…
(calling it a day)
any tips, general feedback, remarks and ridicule is very much appreciated, for, the bakery opens tomorrow!
: )

thanks!
: )
amazing stufff!
