Why do the rivets only stick to the surface properly when I have subsurf turned on (duplifaces)?

When I do not, some rivets go through the mesh.

Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately, I’m not at home at the moment, so I can’t make a screenshot. I’ll try to make it work when I get back.
