Whenever I change a setting in play mode, my character controls stop working until I exit and go back into play mode. Is there a setting I have missed that allows changes to be made while in play mode?

Make sure you’re not in the scene view. Sometimes when you make changes you need to enable the scene view and your game view just stops until you click inside it again.
