What is the short cut key to add additional vertices?

I know I can select both vertices of an edge and click W and subdivide to add a vertex in the middle, but obviously Jonathan is not doing it that way, can anyone tell me how Jonathan did that?

Hey Leon, at the beginning I’m using Ctrl+R to add those vertices. Since it’s all edges and no faces, it’ll just add a vertex instead of an edge loop. It’s pretty quick!
