I’ve run into a weird issue. While attempting to weight paint a mesh I found that the brush will only add, even when CTRL (subtract) or SHIFT (blur) are used.

I added a second mesh object and armature to the scene and weight painting works as expected – but only if I choose to parent with automatic weights?

On the original mesh it doesn’t matter if I choose empty groups or automatic.

I’ve tried everything I can think of to troubleshoot this; brush settings, vertex groups, fresh file, even a factory reset in case an addon or something was gumming up the works. No luck.

So I’m hoping to get some fresh eyes on this to see if anyone can help me sort out where I’ve gone wrong. Thank you!

        Hm,

I really need to up my game, when it comes to Rigging and co.

It looks like it has to do with the Auto Normalize, in combination with the fact, that you have only 1 Bone.

Thank you, Martin! You’re right in that the problem is because I have one bone. I don’t know what I was thinking…it doesn’t make sense to have just one bone (in a case like this anyway). Maybe disabling Auto Normalize would make it work but I think I was just doing it wrong no matter what. As soon as I made a “root” bone for my “hair strand” bone things worked fine (on the Blender side of things anyway).
