volumetrics: how to fake sunshine for interior and get volumetric effect in exterior

i have an exterior scene that could use some volumetric haze (set in smoggy Los Angeles) and also an interior that is mainly going to be lit through a venetian blind by sunshine. not sure what to do about either of these as neither HDR nor sun light will work. 

any suggestions, please?

Could you explain more why a sun light with a volume cube around the scene would not work?

that’s what happens when studying too late at night! i must have skated over the volume part, and of course, as you point out, that is exactly what i need. just redone that part of the tutorial and it should be perfect for what i need.
