      Holding MMB while translating lets you pick an axis just by moving the mouse.

      Pressing SHIFT-[XYZ] allows for scale and translation in the plane that *excludes* the specified axis. G, SHIFT-Z will allow movement in the X- and Y-directions, but not Z.
