What do you mean by blank? ‘White’ or transparent?

Anyway, make sure your Image Settings are correct (by default, they should be…):

You also have to be in the correct viewport shading mode for the image to show. JL goes through it in the tutorial.

Like Omar said: Go to viewport shading. Then look within Color to see Texture below lightning. You may have to also mess with it in Image (located in properties panel) like Martin said.
