Subdivide – right out of the gate

You said something about “right-clicking” to bring up the menu for {subdividing}.

Two things:

I’ve been using “right clicking” to select (blame Jonathan Williamson for that one lol), so I tried left-clicking, {ALT}, {CTRL}, or {SHIFT} clicking – still no menu. So for sh**s and giggles I tries “W” – voila the fated menu.

I am using 4.4.3 if that makes  difference.

Yes, W brings up the ‘specials’ Menu for us Right Click Selecters.

That has been the shortcut for a very long time (long before 2.80), but (fun fact) I just tested it, and in for instance 2.49 (that is the oldest Blender Version I have on my PC) W brings up a Boolean Menu.

Yep, even in 1.80 the W was the specials menu.

I tested it in Object Mode in 2.49. In Edit Mode W brought up the Specials Menu:

Even today my brain still goes W and subdivide. Muscle memory fades way too slowly.
