Purpose of Alpha Over

Can someone please explain to me the purpose of ‘Alpha Over’ node?

Here’s what the manual says:

I guess if I had to try and say it in a sentence, it’s basically to over impose an image over the other using the alpha ort transparency of the image. Hopefully that is correct.
