Pencils change shape in edit mode

When I try to assign colors to the pencils in edit mode, the pencils change shape to a tube as soon as I select them. What can I do to select the wooden parts?

I’m not sure how that happened, but it sounds like those parts are hidden! In edit mode, hit Alt+H to unhide.
