I did everything as in the video (except using the new method with Blender 2.81 to link other files). I posed the weapon like shown in the video, but then I tried to add a new pose library, but the button is greyed out.

I’m in pose mode. In the video you are doing something to select all those “lines”? This tutorial didn’t even explain what an armature or bone is, so I can’t really explain my problem. Anyway after posing the weapon in the video, you did something to select everything, but what exactly? I pressed “A”, my selection then looked exactly like yours, but the “New” button is greyed out.

Hi! It could be that you’re in object or edit mode since the pose library is only used in pose mode. For a full rundown on armatures and bones, I’d recommend taking our fundamentals of rigging course and the previous course about rigging the rifle:

        Happy animating!

I am in pose mode, that’s what I said in my original question 🙂

It’s okay, I redid the course from the beginning and used the old method with proxies, like in the video, and then it worked.

I’ll do the courses you linked first though. I guess that makes more sense.

You’re right. I didn’t read that carefully enough! I couldn’t think of any other reason that would happen, but now I see that you’d have to click the link icon to make the pose library local to that file before editing it.

Hi, Jonathan – could you maybe clarify your last answer a bit? I’d like to understand how to work with the library override.

Hey @theotormon , hope this helps to clarify:

When you link an object, you can’t edit it because all of its data is being grabbed from the original file. By making a library override, you’re telling Blender that you want to edit some properties (but we don’t know which yet) in this file.

Once you’ve created your override, you’ll notice that when you select it, most properties (like the pose library) are greyed out. These are the ones that are still linked to the original file. You can only edit it in that file but not this one.

All data blocks are frozen like this individually, and you have to pick which ones you want to override. To do so, click the link icon:

Once you do that, you can edit the data and do whatever you need:

Thank you for the response! I see something slightly different – no link button on pose libarary.

I think this may be a bug or limitation of the library overrides since the whole system is still a WIP. To make it work I just added an empty pose library to the source file, saved, and then re-opened the file it was linked to. I’ve updated the files for the course to include that change.

random note, an empty pose library was not added to the weapon itself in the fps_weapons.blend. open up fps_weapons.blend, create a new pose library, save it, then you can link the weapon like shown in the screenshots above.
