Sparked by my own curiosity while doing the HUMAN project, I wondered what the different values of Melatonin Concentration and Redness would produce using the Melatonin Concentration method. So I set up an animation rendering 121 values taking each of the two from 1.0 to 0.0. Just to make it look a bit more natural, I did add .25 coat, .25 random color and .15 random roughness, but I think I left the other values at default. This chart was the result.

In the 1.0 and the 0.0 concentrations, the differences are very subtle, mostly noticeable in the highlights and shadows. Between .8 and .1 concentration, you can really see the difference the redness makes as you decrease it’s value.

(I did save a larger version of this that is a bit less pixelated, but I made it 4000×4000. Model is my Fox girl character, just without the ears. Also… just did the base hair, not the eyebrows in the test.)

Awesome! Thanks for sharing! Love those kind of tests that become good references later!

          That’s why I did it 😀

Working on a video version too… on that one, seems to blend into each other, but it’s compiled using the same images as above 😀

I was curious how to get the various hair colors so wanted to see what combinations did what 😀 I figured 1/10s would be fine enough for a test, though you can certainly do in between 😀

If you’re going for grey hair, I’d recommend 0.1 to 0.3 for the Melanin value and on the lower side of the redness. Save 0.0 in Melanin for albino or someone you want to have white hair.

Here’s a video version that gives a bit of a closer look at each value.
