ive got a question reguarding “separate by selection”

So after i hit shift D to duplicate i get my new edge and can move4 it around and extrude it and do whatever too it but once i hit P than separate it by selection i can not move or extrude it anymore. it shows up in the top left as a new object but its now a darker orange. Am i doing something wrong or is it something that has changed in blender since this series has released? Thank you for your time!

Hey @mediumestviking ,

By pressing P > Separate By Selection, you are making this a new object, separating it from the current selected object, 

to edit the new object, leave edit mode, select the new object then enter edit mode.
