Is there a way to save a mask (really multiple masks) so that you can reselect a specific area easily (a la Photoshop selection channels)? I guess this might be too difficult for Blender w/ DynoTopo.

I am unaware of a way to save masks while sculpting. It should be very doable for non-dyntopo meshes. But as you said, dyntopo would be a challenge since the topology is constantly changing. Though it would be a pretty awesome feature!
