Hey, I made another one. After RELIC and TREAD I was finally able to finish a piece without looking anything up.

The most difficult piece was the pattern on the metal grip and the chalice. For the Grip I fiddled around with Geometry Nodes, got close, and gave up. If you have an Idea on how to create these woven, spiraling, flat metal strips with that crease, I’d love to hear suggestions. I ended up using the normal texture of the Vinyl Couch in InstaMat.

The chalice was pretty tricky as well, the topology ended up not that great and I had to use a cage for baking. The problem that I was not able to fix is the rhombus shape. I tried adding support loops, but the subdivision kept rounding it out. Would you in this case try to Bevel after the Subdiv? Or do you have other ideas?

You would need support loops here:

How far outward they go is up to you, it’ll need some Topology changes when doing that, but nothing too complicated. You can also Bevel the green Edges, but then do it before the Subdivision Surface Modifier. I’d opt for the holding Edges, because you’ll have more control over the Topology, which is a big advantage when using a Subdiv Modifier.

You might also be able to get away with putting some Creasing on those 4 corners.

Modeling is, by far, the field were I struggle the most. I think that building an intuition will take me some time. But already, I would approach the chalice in a different way now, so failing at it seems to be the best way to get better… And of cause, taking the courses here!

Just want to say that this is looking phenomenal! I think you’ve really been able to capture the essence of your concept quite well, and I will say that I really enjoy hearing that you were able to accomplish all of that without needing to look anything up! Mission accomplished for me and these courses. 😁

Like you said, building that intuition is only going to strengthen with every new project you take on, but the fact that you are already envisioning new ways you would’ve approached this is indicative that you are on the right track!
