I have the 2 cubes, of the rim, selected, with 1 rotated & use Object: Make Links: Obj Data, the top rotates to the unrotated position to make the other cube. I am missing something, but what?

Did you rotate the second cube in object mode or edit mode? Rotating in Object Mode should maintain the rotation after making the link.

I have a same problem. I know you don’t need an answer anymore, but it might help others.
For this to work correctly, you don’t need to change the origins.
