I believe the interface has changed a bit since this was made, was wondering if you could update. Basically the World properties is completely different and I also could not find out how to soften the shadows with the current area lamp options. Thanks.

The settings look the same to me…Are you sure you’re not looking at Blender Render settings instead of Cycles?
