I am using the BI start file to follow along. However when I open it, it is in Cycles render. So when I switch it, all the items, like the background image used and the grid floor disappear. Plus I don’t have the options in the materials panel like in the video.

I have the same problem, and it doesn’t render properly when you switch the viewport shading to rendered, it just renders the lower left hand corner of the scene.
