How would I go about drawing one of those spheres? Every time I try, it just ends up looking like one of those pictures Hubble took of Pluto (e.g. a bunch of random smudges in a circle).

I think your question is answered by the lecture “building up values. Make sure you add layers above your plain surface and add a clipping mask to each layer. This will prevent your values to be displayed outside the original form. Furthermore you should work with a big soft brush. Enable the the Transfer setting to Pressure sensitive and ensure that brush size is Not beeing affected by pen pressure. I hope it solves your problem. Have fun.
