How was the flute object created in this example? Did it start by inserting a cylinder (or something) then modifying? I ask because I am getting some odd shading effects (while in object mode) when I tried recreating this column, and I’m wondering if it has something to do with how created it. My guess right now is it thinks my flute is the interior of a cylinder or something.

If you have the normals pointing inside then (in edit mode) selected the faces, ctrl N recalculats outside. shift ctrl N recalculates inside.
