Hi Kent,
When I try this on one of my examples with either the Alpha Over or the Mix node I only see the latest render layer (i.e. the Orb in your example) but not the two others. If I move the Fac slider to 0.5 in both nodes I can see all three layer but they look somehow dampened.
Any idea what I did wrong?

Nevermind, I found out myself. There were 2 things missing:
1. I forgot to set the World background to Transparent in the Render tab (as shown in a previous lesson ^^)
2. I had to reassign the Alpha Channel of the top render layer to the Alpha Over node.
