@wod is correct in the functionality aspect of this. It only ‘visually’ affects the way it is displayed in the viewport. Its position, scale and orientation is displayed at a different spot. This visual aspect has no effect on the functionality of the rig at all.
In the context of the tutorial however, the main issue I had was that I had created to the widget before overriding the display. This meant I had to adjust the widget a second time. If I had of overridden before adding the widget, I could have just adjusted the widget shape once. Nobody likes doing things more times than necessary.
