For some reason when I try to use the mask tool or try any of the hide/mask buttons, the black area does not show up for me. Nothing happens. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Do you have any modifiers active on the object you’re trying to sculpt? Check the modifier panel. If you do have any active you’ll notice a warning that states masking is disabled as long as the modifier is enabled.
