Hey Michael @Blender Mike ,

You are trying to connect two Objects together in Edit Mode and that is not possible (in Blender):

First combine them into one Object; in Object Mode, Select all those separate Objects and then CTRL+J to make them into a single Object. Then switch to Edit Mode and try again.
