External Particle Cache Bug in Blender 2.79?

I’ve tried the external particle cache with Blender 2.79 and it only finds 3 particles. Such a bug has been reported for Blender 2.8 here.

That could very well be! The last time I used a particle cache for a project was before 2.78, so I haven’t run into that personally but it looks like it’s been around for a bit.

It’s still broken in Blender 2.9a and the parenting also doesn’t work so that you can’t move your external particles around.
