    When you Alt+D to link the copy the low poly object and applied the displacement, the original low poly will be slightly larger, right?

      The low poly object should stay the same size! If you use the displacement modifier then they can be instances of each other since modifiers won’t affect the other instances. If you inflate the cage in edit mode though, it’ll have to be a Shift+D copy instead of an Alt+D instance.
