Do you normally specialize in one of either hard surface modeling or sculpting organic shapes? I think I just want to do hard surfaces mainly so I’m hoping I can get away with just a basic knowledge of the sculpting tools just in case they are needed for something..

Hobbyists and Pros can and do specialize in either hard surface or soft (more often referred to as “organic”). For example, my brother is a hard surface weapons artist at Hi-Rez studios. So yes, if you prefer to focus on hard surface over organic, that’s entirely acceptable.
