Nice model, but bad shading, try Object > Shade Auto Smooth.

Ha! I knew something wasn’t right, I added the smoothing so the oval shape would look correct, then broke the rest.

I’m loving the course so far, but it’s so crucial to choose the correct primitive to start that it’s almost scary. I would have never guessed that the ICO Sphere was the way to go. I wonder if there are any tips to answer that initial question

The answer to the question what to start with will come with experience…and even then, there are more than one way to do things, so there will often be several possibilities, that are equally good, to start with…most of the times, you won’t think about it and just start…sometimes you’ll find, that it might have been better to start with another Primitive, or a Curve, instead of a Mesh Primitive…

Often (but not always), I start with a Circle to make a cylindrical structure, instead of with a Cylinder…Is that better? Probably not…3D is not all about rules…just follow your guts and be prepared to start over if it doesn’t work out.

Yeah I know the feeling. But as you model more and more and you make more and more mistakes, you start developing a kind of Neo vision where you already know which paths leads to where and with that intuitive sense you know where to begin and what to avoid. So just model and practice a lot, it’s fun.
