blender 2.8 painting

I’m currently working with 2.8.  

Anyone have any idea why color doesn’t display on the canvas.  I have both the brush and canvas objects setup.  The canvas has been properly subdivided.  

If I select ‘displace’ or ‘waves’ as a side effect, it works properly.  Only the color doesn’t display.

To view the color, you can switch the shading color mode to Vertex: 

It’s not very obvious, and also I found that there’s no way to view the Weight option in object mode – I’ll report that to the devs!
