Hi Jared, I’m glad you’re giving it a go for the first time!
- Try turning your brush strength up to 1 (hotkey Shift+F)
- Not that I am aware of, though you can turn on Face Selection Masking in the header to see which faces are masked out.
- By painting over those areas in the 3D view instead of the image editor
- You can for this exercise, but it’s recommended that you get a tablet if you plan on doing any sort of painting regularly or professionally.
