@duerer of course there is no merging of the First and Last elements of the Array , while they are on the extreme ends of the array!
The array is not yet made into a circle, because the Curve Modifier comes after the Array Modifier! (This is what this is about: Modifier Stack Order…) You could use a Weld Modifier at the end, but as you already noticed yourself, that would stretch the first and last segments slightly.
The Simple Deform is doesn’t have this issue (the stretching), but you will still need a Weld Modifier to merge the ends.
