One way you can tell if you’re in Vertex mode and you have one selected, if you look at the edges it’s connected to, one will have a glow and the other won’t. It can also cause weird issues when you’re trying to do things. (IE You’re trying to do something and it’s not doing what you expected.) But the easiest way to clear them is what Martin said.
