thanks for the blend file. that does help, though i still cannot get the effect of the bowl receiving the momentum of the monkey as it hits it, which is what i see at 6.33. i may yet find what setting i have got that is different. i suppose it may just be that 2.79 is somehow a bit different from 2.77. i cannot know this without a fairly extensive trail through commit logs and i fear that is not going to happen!
