You don’t actually have to be in Face Select Mode though.
You can (with those Faces Selected) go to Face > Shade Smooth, or use the shortcut CTRL+F > Shade Smooth.
If you use the Context Menu (right click for LCS, or W for RCS), then you do need to be in Face Select Mode.
