Yes Keith one or more screenshots would be helpful.
It sounds like your saying F makes a Face, but it doesn’t make a Face…That doesn’t make any sense to me.
But could it be, that you are in X-ray Mode or so? Get into the habit of switching between Solid and Wireframe (and maybe X-ray, if you like that) Mode; some things are easier to see int Solid View, than in Wireframe and vice versa.
