Hi Joseph,
You can use the Version, used in the Course (Blender 2.67), or have a look at the beginning of the “Press Start” Course, where Adding Reference Images is shown in a newer Blender Version.
I’d say the first option is best for you, because if you’re already stuck now, your troubles will only get worse during this Course.
