In each occasion I could change the material to object, not to mesh, but in my case it’s little messy.
That’s really the only solution I can think of for that specific situation. It’s strange that Copy Materials to Selected doesn’t work when you assign the material to the object instead of the data, but you can still use Object -> Make Links -> Materials. That seems to work fine. Hope that helps!
