Can you walk us through the issue with more detail. What is the weird outcome? Can you post other screenshots that undesired outcome more clearly, even better if you can post a screen grab video. One thing that could be happening is that you are trying to join and create faces on two separate meshes. You first need to join them with Control + J so they are part of the same object.
