Switching nodes from one to another is extra functionality possible with the Node Wrangler addon. It’s included with the official version of Blender but it’s not enabled out of the box.
Go to User Preferences > Addons and search “node wrangler”. Enable it. Then in the Node Editor, with a node selected, you can switch with SHIFT + S.
