If your cavity map is closer to white, then overlay will blow things out. To use overlay best, the general value of the cavity map needs to be closer to 50% grey. If it’s closer to white, I recommend taking the cavity map into an image editor like photoshop or gimp and bringing the levels down to a 50% grey.
