Hey Julian, in 2.79 the hair grid still shows up for me if either Internal Friction is above zero or both Density Target and Strength are above zero. You’ll also need to scrub the timeline or move to the next keyframe to give Blender a chance to update the simulation based on the settings. Hope that helps!
