Thank you for the offers of help.  Since writing I’ve tried three other things:

• opened a new instance of Blender and copied across all the objects
• created a new animation file
• gone back to version 2.78 (I was using 2.78.5)

and nothing has changed, the problem is just the same.  I’ve uploaded the file to https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ym9ke9rlglck59/exercise_dominoes%201.blend?dl=0 and I’m running a Dell XPS-15 with Windows 10.
